Why is integration becoming a development challenge?

The development of marine propulsion systems has changed significantly in recent years. Alongside the internal combustion engine, the powertrain now also includes electric or partially electric propulsion systems, complete with electronics and control systems.

This also increases the demands on development, as conventional, electrical and digital systems must work together reliably. Among other things, this involves integrating control systems and jointly testing different operating states.

Added to this is the collaboration between different companies. Depending on the project, the individual components come from different manufacturers. This gives rise to additional engineering processes – from technical planning right through to commissioning.

This makes it all the more important to define interfaces at an early stage and to reduce the integration effort whilst the development is still underway.

For engine manufacturers and packagers, this means a significantly greater level of integration effort. Development no longer ends with the individual component. Instead, the key factor is how reliably it integrates into a functioning overall system.

This is why integrated system solutions are becoming increasingly important. If key components are already designed and engineered to work together, processes such as development and subsequent commissioning can be significantly simplified.
