How is hybridisation changing ship design?
Ship designers make many fundamental decisions right at the start of a project. The design phase involves allocating space for engine rooms, tanks and maintenance areas. The available installation space is a fixed parameter and, of course, a cost factor.
Hybridisation introduces additional components that must be accommodated in the engine room. This does not alter the available installation space. Consequently, structural integration is becoming increasingly important.
The more compact a propulsion system is, the greater the freedom available when designing the engine room and arranging other systems.
Every additional component increases the planning effort and can have an impact on adjacent systems. This is particularly true in the case of ship retrofits, as the key challenge here is to integrate new propulsion components into existing engine rooms – without making extensive changes to the ship’s structure.
For ship designers, therefore, it is not just the selection of individual components that is becoming more important. Equally crucial is how well a propulsion system can be planned as a complete solution from the outset and how easily it can be integrated into the ship’s design.
This is particularly true when existing installation spaces are to be utilised and extensive structural modifications must be avoided.
