What requirements does green shipping place on yachts and recreational craft?
Green shipping is often associated with commercial shipping; in fact, the leisure sector is also changing. Modern propulsion concepts are increasingly finding their way into yachts and other leisure craft.
Whilst fixed operating profiles and emission targets favour the use of hybrid propulsion systems in ferries or workboats, different requirements take precedence in the leisure sector.
Many owners, for example, want a smoother sailing experience, less noise when manoeuvring and greater comfort on board,especially on night transits Hybrid or electric propulsion systems offer practical advantages, particularly in harbours or coastal areas. Entering and leaving the harbour is virtually silent, whilst at the same time there are no local exhaust emissions.
(Partially) electric operation can also offer advantages in sensitive natural or coastal areas. At the same time, the additional technology should take up as little space as possible. On smaller vessels in particular, propulsion systems compete for space with cabins, storage space and other on-board equipment.
Compact solutions provide additional flexibility in planning; new propulsion systems must be integrated in the most space-saving way possible and must not restrict the use of the vessel.
Another aspect is operation. Pleasure yachts do not always have a technical crew. Systems should therefore function intuitively and be usable in everyday on-board life without complex interventions.
The requirements therefore differ from those of commercial shipping. At the same time, a common theme emerges here too: with every additional component, the space required and the effort needed for integration increase.
Solutions are therefore required that are as compact as possible and can be integrated into existing vessel designs without extensive modifications.
