How can the complexity of hybrid propulsion systems be reduced?
In previous articles, we have examined the topic of green shipping from various perspectives and in relation to different target groups and personas. Depending on the area of application and target group, the requirements can differ considerably.
Ferry operators require reliable solutions for day-to-day operations on routes that are always the same. Public sector clients prioritise long-term investment security. In the leisure sector, the emphasis is on comfort and compact integration.
Shipowners, shipping companies, ship designers and engine manufacturers each view the same development from their own technical and commercial perspective.
Despite these differing requirements, there are commonalities. Hybridisation not only offers a the number of technical possibilities; at the same time, the complexity of propulsion systems also increases.
Additional components must be integrated mechanically and electrically, control systems must be coordinated, and different interfaces must be taken into account. This makes development, installation, commissioning and servicing more challenging.
In many projects, the engine, gearbox, electric motors, electronics and other components come from different manufacturers. Each component fulfils its own function, but it is only within the context of the project that they come together to form an operational propulsion system. This also increases the effort required for coordination.
A complete solution: the new TME Hybrid System
This is precisely where REINTJES comes in with their new TME Hybrid System. The electric motor is no longer mounted separately behind the gearbox, but is integrated directly onto the gearbox.
This creates a compact unit in which key components are already integrated with one another. This reduces the interface engineering effort and cost, saves installation space and simplifies both installation and commissioning.
This approach benefits all parties involved. Shipowners receive a ready made solution designed for long-term, predictable operation. Shipyards benefit from reduced integration effort during installation and commissioning.
Ship designers can incorporate a compact solution into their planning at an early stage and make more efficient use of available installation space. For engine manufacturers and other project partners, clearly defined and technically coordinated interfaces facilitate development and integration.
